Slow crack growth in laminate composites via in-situ X-ray tomography and simulations

چکیده

To assist in damage tolerant analyses for composites, a compact tension T650/5320 laminate composite was characterized via in-situ X-ray tomography during cyclic loading. A 3D image processing analysis of the fatigue crack growth illustrated various mechanisms, including intralaminar cracking (dominant) and delamination facilitating ply cross-over. finite element conducted to compute change stored energy per cycle, dU/dN, which showed that experimentally observed rates, ply, collapsed single dU/dN curve, where direct observations fiber bridging were associated with reduction rate influenced ply.

Fabrication of Ti3SiC‌‌2-SiC max phase composites via in-situ and ex-situ synthesis

Recently, a series of three-component compounds with the combination of Mn+1AXn known as Max phases have been considered as a new material. One of the most important features of Max phases, is the self-healing property of them. The main reason for considering Max Phases is a unique collection of unusual properties including their metallic, ceramic, physical, and mechanical properties. One of th...

Direct in situ observation of ZnO nucleation and growth via transmission X-ray microscopy.

The nucleation and growth of a nanostructure controls its size and morphology, and ultimately its functional properties. Hence it is crucial to investigate growth mechanisms under relevant growth conditions at the nanometer length scale. Here we image the nucleation and growth of electrodeposited ZnO nanostructures in situ, using a transmission X-ray microscope and specially designed electroche...

X-ray Tomography and Finite Elements Simulations of Rock Mechanics

Chalk cliffs in many countries, such as around the North Sea in Europe, are places of natural beauty but also under the constant threat of erosion. Collapse of chalk cliffs, which are often poorly consolidated (Figure 1), have cost lives and destroyed property and cultural heritage with a concerning frequency. Predicting collapse, however, is difficult and has had little success in the past. To...

Composite Laminate Impact Damage Assessment by High Resolution 3d X-ray Tomography and Laminography

Improvements to toughening mechanisms in composite materials have hitherto relied on visual inspection techniques that can be rather limited, especially since the inherent damage behaviour is three-dimensional (3D) requiring high resolution to capture micro-cracks and similar damage. To achieve a better understanding of impact damage behaviour, synchrotron radiation computed laminography (SRCL)...

Slow crack growth: models and experiments

The properties of slow crack growth in brittle materials are analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. We propose a model based on a thermally activated rupture process. Considering a 2D spring network submitted to an external load and to thermal noise, we show that a preexisting crack in the network may slowly grow because of stress fluctuations. An analytical solution is found for the e...
